Garnering support for the White Cross Project
PRETORIA — The think tank and advocacy group Lex Libertas has just returned from a productive liaison trip to Washington, D.C. to garner support for the White Cross Project, through which the institution plans to display 3 000 crosses on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to raise awareness about the crisis in South Africa and to channel this towards support for viable solutions. The White Cross Project consists of four steps:
- To collect 100 000 names on a petition for the U.S. Government to appoint a special envoy to the Afrikaner people and other cultural minorities, and for the pursuit of self-governance to be recognised as a legitimate pursuit;
- To display 3 000 white crosses on the National Mall to raise awareness about the crisis in South Africa, particularly with regard to farm attacks;
- To host a public conference in Washington, D.C. where victims of farm attacks, land invasions and racially exclusive policies will share their stories with American audiences; and
- To formally submit a request to the House of Representatives and the Senate to initiate public hearings about the state of affairs in South Africa.
This campaign was sparked after various media outlets in the U.S. and South Africa responded to the meeting between President Trump and President Ramaphosa, arguing that the crisis in South Africa is exaggerated and in some cases even arguing that there are no farm murders, land invasions or race laws in South Africa.
‘We do not want any other country to fix South Africa. We need to do that ourselves. But we cannot sit idly while people in influential positions go out of their way to discredit those who seek to contribute to a solution by arguing that there is nothing to be solved, or that legitimate concerns expressed about South Africa are exaggerated,’ said Dr Ernst Roets, Executive Director at Lex Libertas.
‘What we do ask from friends within South Africa and abroad, is support for our pursuit to promote autonomy in our own country, because the right of communities to decide over their own affairs is inalienable, regardless of what the South African government decides.’
Lex Libertas spoke with various stakeholders, including media outlets, political representatives, think tank researchers, activist groups and staffers working for the U.S. Administration.
Once confirmation of the dates and venues for the vigil and conference are confirmed, they will be announced.
Lex Libertas is a think tank and advocacy group working towards a viable political dispensation in South Africa, based on the principles of freedom, decentralisation, and self-governance.
